It's getting warm in Maseru

Wente chatted today about the veil and global warming, again.

This is frankly getting repetitive. Wente says nothing that she hasn't already stated in two columns on the subject. So instead let me point out this Karen Armstrong article, probably the best piece I've seen so far on the niqab.

On global warming, she claims that reducing greenhouse gases would require going to the economic standards of Lesotho! And yet, apparently, it's environmentalists who are the scaremongers. Never mind that the Kyoto treaty calls for cuts back to 1990 levels. Last I heard, Canada was well ahead of Lesotho at that time.

Above a good article on the niqab, and please no more comparisons to nuns, they do not wear full veil just head covering, which is not the issue. The full face covering is what the issue is about, and the seperation it causes, not wearing kirpans, or skullcaps whatever. The debate has got so dumb on both sides, and Armstrong should no a lot better about the cultural conditions that make women wear the niqab, and it is nothing to do with so called victimisation from the West.

  • I agree with Hari's article. Wente is one of those engaging in the Muslim-bashing that Hari describes.

  • I use to think global warming was not something for us to worry about. I'm starting to see a big increase in temperatures around the world through and this is starting to make me worry a bit.
